Mayo Intermediate Championship - Knockout
Sun, 22 Sep, Venue: Elverys MacHale Park, Castlebar, (Quarter Final 2), Burrishoole 2-12 Crossmolina Deel Rovers 2-11
Crossmolina were dramatically knocked out of the Mayo Intermediate Championship Quarter final at Elvery’s McHale Park on Sunday last deep into injury time. Picture the scene Crossmolina two points up and looked like they were on their way into the Semi-final, Burrishoole were awarded a free 25m out Crossmolina defence lined up to defend all bar the right corner of the Bacon factory goal end. Michael Moran lobs the ball gently into the goal area where his brother James with his back to goal flicks the ball over his head into the corner of the net to give his side a one point advantage and from the kick out Paul Lydon blew the final whistle.
The Deel-Siders were left devastated. Crossmolina had played with the aid of the breeze and Cathal Carolan and Brian Benson quickly pointed before Fintan McManamon pointed, this was answered with a like score from corner back Chris Myles. Alan Ryder drove over a point from 30m and immediately after Jordan Flynn and Fintan McManamon exchanged points. After twelve minutes Fionan Duffy pointed, from this junction on Crossmolina were in command to the break. Fionan Duffy drove a high ball into goal which went all the way to the net in the 20th minute, moments later Fionan tacked on a point. Fintan McManamon pointed for the west Mayo side before Cathal Carolan and Brian Benson extended the lead with points each, on the stroke of half time Alan Ryder pointed to leave the half time score 1-8 to 0-5.
As the players trooped off to dressing rooms the lines man on the stand side brought to the attention of the referee of some incident and when the players lined up for the start of the second half the referee called over Padraig McManamon and red carded him, this sending off was the start of Burrishoole revival scoring 1-3 without reply, with a gifted penalty as Patrick Loftus cleared his line the referee blew his whistle for what spectators thought was a free out instead he awarded a penalty for an innocuous challenge by Keith Hopkins and gave him a black card. Michael Moran slotted home the resulting penalty and quickly added on two points in between tacked on another Fintan McManamon to tie the score in the 42nd minute. Mikie Loftus broke the Deel-Siders barren spell with a point. John Sammon and Alan Ryder restored the Burrishoole lead with points each. Michael Gallagher and Michael Moran traded points. At this junction Brian Benson was fouled three times with a clear jersey pull but play was waved on and minutes later Stephen Duffy was sent straight through on goal by Conor Loftus and was clearly tripped in the square, the man black waved away the claims for a penalty.
Fionan Duffy knifed his way through the heart of the winners defence to drill the ball to the net Fionan pointed moments later and Michael Moran pointed to leave just two points separating the sides as the game entered the third minuet of injury time came the dramatic free kick which brought an end to Crossmolina Intermediated ambitions
