Mayo GAA League Division 2A
Sun, 15 Aug,
(Round: Round 2), Crossmolina Deel Rovers 0-9 Ballaghaderreen 4-10
https://online.fliphtml5.com/gtrwi/xkox/
The Sunday afternoon throw-in in St Tiernan’s Park saw Crossmolina Deel Rovers host Ballaghaderreen in the second round of the Mayo Senior Football League Division 2A campaign. Breezy conditions greeted both teams as they took to the field as rain threatened but thankfully never produced more than a drizzle.
A game that could have really been out of sight early on had Ballaghaderreen kept their foot on the pedal, as they came of the blocks at blistering pace. Crossmolina never really recovered from this early flurry, desperately trying to pull themselves back into the fray for the remainder of the game. There was no doubt they were missing the influential duo of Conor Loftus and Jordan Flynn who were part of the historic Mayo victory over Dublin in Croke Park the night before.
Both sides will rue their misses having clocked up a large number of wides. Ballaghaderreen could easily have added another 4 goals to their tally had they been more clinical on front of the Crossmolina goal.
The joint management of Michael Solan and Andy Moran, the later lining out at no.14, were forced to make a change before the ball was thrown in, as Luke O’Grady appeared to be in some discomfort during the warm-up.
However, it was his replacement Dylan Feeney, who opened the afternoon’s scoring inside the first minute with a well worked goal by Ballaghaderreen. Cormac Doohan played a floating ball in to Kuba Callaghan who plucked it from the sky and laid it on to the marauding David Drake. Drake broke through the Crossmolina defence and played the ball across the face of goal where it was palmed into the open net by Feeney.
Ballagh’ were two goals to the good inside of two minutes as Paddy Callaghan played a long ball along the wing to Cormac Doohan who turned and fed Moran. Holding off his defender, Moran slipped the pass to Kuba Callaghan who bore down on the Crossmolina goals only to see his low shot saved by JP Mulhern. Unfortunately for the Crossmolina shot stopper, he could only manage to divert the shot into the direction of Andy Dillon, who finished coolly into the roof of the net.
David Drake was once again influential in the next score as he broke into the Crossmolina ’45 playing a one two with Owen Jordan and Domhnall Forrest respectively before turning out to find Cormac Doohan in open field. Doohan gladly tapped open on the turn to extend Ballagh’s lead to seven.
Cross’ kicked three wides and dropped one short into the hands of Gavin Conway and on the 9-minute mark the Crossmolina management decided to change things up by introducing Gerard Haran as they tried to get some foothold in the match.
However, it was Ballagh’ who stuck again as Doohan found himself on the end of a Ballagh’ attack that started from their own kickout.
Little more than a minute later the red hot Doohan found himself in space again as Moran turned over the Cross’ defence deep in their own half and fed to Doohan who ran direct at goal and finished expertly into the top left corner of the Deel Rovers net. Ballagh’ were now 11 points to the good and things looked ominous for North Mayo men.
Ballagh’ kept the pressure on the Deel Rovers men but could not punish some of their turnovers as they kicked another 3 wides.
It was 19 minutes before Crossmolina got their opening score of the game coming from a free kick on the 30m mark. Finaun Duffy kicked a curling shot that just crept inside the right-hand side post to give his team some empathise to get back into this round two tie.
Crossmolina were forced into making a change on the 23rd minute after Hugh Cafferty awkwardly appearing to hurt his knee in the process. Coming in as his replacement was Barry Murphy.
Ballagh’ dropped another two short and one wide before Crossmolina kicked another score. This time Nigel Caden kicking from open play after gathering a neatly placed ball which was played in by David Howley, turning and slotting over.
Finaun Duffy kicked Crossmolina’s next score from a free, in a near carbon copy of his previous effort.
Kuba Callaghan opened his account from the day as the ever-present Cormac Doohan was fouled inside the D right in front of the Crossmolina goal. An easy tap over for the Ballagh’ free kick taker.
Crossmolina’s second score from play was a point, but could easily have ended up in a goal and a much-needed lifeline in this game for the Deel Rovers men. Keelan Hegarty picked the ball up around the middle of the field and kicked in a high ball that looked to be covered by the Ballagh’ corner back Aaron Lynch. However, Lynch misjudged his jump allowing the ball to fall into the hands of David Howley who then played the ball through to Conor Rowland who blasted the ball just over the Ballagh’ crossbar not realising he had more time to compose himself for a strike at goal.
The half time score was Ballaghaderreen three goals and 3 points to Crossmolina’s 4 points. An 8-point lead that could well have been substantially more had more chances been converted.
A half time change for Ballagh’ saw the introduction of young David McHugh at corner back replacing Aaron lynch who showed signs of difficulty prior to the half time whistle.
Kuba Callaghan opened the second half scoring with another placed ball and kicked his third and Ballagh’s second of the half four minutes later. He was dialled in on the frees hitting three from three on the day so far.
Ballagh’ saw another goal chance spurned as Dylan Feeney was blocked down as he pulled the trigger on the right-hand corner of the small rectangle. This however, infuriated the Ballagh’ forward as it appeared to have been a foot block.
Andy Dillon opened his account for the day after been fed by Doohan who was expertly picked out by Ryan Lynch from the middle of the park.
Just after the restart, from the second water break, Dylan Feeney once again found the back of the Crossmolina net. Paddy Callaghan held up play well and stepped inside a defender to find Cormac Doohan whose snap shot went high into the air and fell at the back post. Feeney gracefully plucked it out of the air and on landing turned quickly, poking the ball into the top corner of the Cross’ net. Another killer blow for the Deel Rovers men who were turned over in attack once again.
Ballagh started to make some changes as they brought Oisín Phillips, Friday night’s Man of the Match Paddy O’Grady and Sean McHugh into the fold.
20 minutes into the second half, Finaun Duffy kicked a beautifully floated free for Crossmolina after some silly fouling from Ballagh, as they looked to have the Cross’ attack well bottled up on their ‘45.
Ballagh stalwart Joe Dillon was introduced into the fray with about ten minutes left to play as David Drake left as a precautionary measure, after picking up a little knock in the action.
Crossmolina now started to empty their own bench introducing, Colm Hegarty and Edward Gough.
Finaun Duffy kicked another fine free just inside the Ballagh’ ’45 as Crossmolina tried to get something more from their attack in the later stages of the tie. But it was clear Ballagh’ were not going to give the onion bag up easy.
The next three minutes were the Joe Show as Dillon kicked two scores with his first two touches of the size 5. A clinical display from the Ballagh’ forward who needed no GPS to know where the goals were, making light work of both efforts.
His first, saw some excellent build up play from Sean McHugh and Cormac Doohan to release Dillon for a tap over off the right from the left side of the D and his second saw McHugh once again feed Dillon after picking up the break from a Cross’ kickout.
Crossmolina’s penultimate score came from Tommy Walsh. However, this again was a glorious chance of a goal for the North Mayo men as they had numbers over, had the ball been played across the goal and would have taken some gloss off the Ballagh’ score.
Ballagh themselves missed a guilt edged chance for a goal and Moran expertly gathered a ball into the inside line and quickly released Domhnall Forrest who ran straight at the Cross’ goal. To the dismay of the Ballagh’ attackers Forrest’s shot went to the left and hot the side netting when he had two clinical finishers in Dillon and Doohan screaming for the ball on the centre and left-hand side of the goals respectively.
Owen Jordan saw black for Ballagh’ for a cynical foul on David Howley as he bore down on the Ballagh goal. The resulting free was duly kicked over by Crossmolina marksman Finaun Duffy.
The final score of the game came from a Moran free after Tommy Walsh had initially won the ball out in front of Moran, but the ball broke away from him and all he could do was touch it away on the ground to stop Moran from picking it and turning for goals.
The game ended Ballaghaderreen 4 goals and 10 points to Crossmolina’s 9 points. A second defeat for Crossmolina in Division 2 they will no doubt put this one down to the slow start and rarely threatening the Ballagh goal forcing only one save from Gavin Conway.
Notable performances for the North Mayo men were Conor Rowland, Tommy Walsh and by far the most influential Deel Rovers man was Finaun Duffy with clinical execution from dead balls. The Cross’ marksman could have near doubled his tally had he converted all his chances.
A good day at the office for the Border Men who showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game and never really looked like being caught after the opening flurry on the Cross’ goal. Some fine performances for Ballagh’ included; in attack Andy Dillon and Dylan Feeney, the later showing his potential after battling injury the last two years. David Drake and Domhnall Forrest were excellent in defence and Gavin Conway in goal was steady all game where his kicking and direction of play was excellent throughout.
But Man of the Match has to go to Cormac Doohan who finished with 1 - 02 and 2 assists. The Ballagh’ attacker could have added more to his tally, but his three misses won’t take any shine off a very fine performance.

(Round: Semi Final 1), Bohola Moy Davitts 2-12 Crossmolina Deel Rovers 7-7
They say goals wins matches and this was certainly the case in this County U15 League Semi Final at Robert McCallion Park Swinford on Tuesday last. Adam Mills fired home the first goal after three minutes Josh Moyles grabbed the Deel-Siders second after thirteen minuets in between Conor Ryder Adam Conlon Jamie Clarke tacked on five points just before the water break Aaron Coggins pointed. After the break Adam Conlon tied score with two points and Conor Ryder gave Moy Davitts the lead which was short lived when Oisin Deane tacked on a goal and a point. The east Mayo side regained the lead from a Conor Ryder penalty after a brilliant save from Patrick O’Malley which fell kindly in his follow up drive to net. James O’Boyle scored his sides fourth goal and Oisin Deane and Kobe McDonald tacked on points before break to leave the half time score 4 – 4 to 1 – 8 Jamie Clarke and Adam Mills exchanged points before Kyle Bodes was lurking in the goal mouth after another Brilliant Patrick O’Malley save to fist to the net Dylan Flynn and Josh Moyles quickly pointed and Jamie Clarke replied with a point before a three goal barrage from Oisin Deane and two from Kobe McDonald one a penalty after a defender picked the ball off the ground in the square. After the water break there was only two more points score Sean Reid for Moy Davitts Luke Maloney. There were many outstanding displays on both sides but both goalkeepers made a number of great saves and could not be faulted for the shots beat them
