Mayo G.A.A. Senior Football Championship Sun, 14 Sep, Venue: Foxford, (Round: Relegation Playoff), Crossmolina Deel Rovers V Westport St Patrick's 12:00, Ref: Kevin Connelly Crossmolina Deel Rovers 2-15 Westport St Patrick's 1-09 A large crowd turned out in Foxford on Sunday afternoon last for this Senior Championship relegation play off and they were treated to a masterclass in sharp shooting. Crossmolinaâs inside forward trio of Peadar Gardiner, Brian Benson and Ciaran McDonald were on fire and propelled their side to an eight point lead at half time, and accounted for 1-11 of their sides total. Joe Keanes men were rightly up for this one and led from pillar to post â recording all but one of their 2-15 tally from play. Crossâ looked sharper all over the field. They were first to almost every ball and were very economical in front of the sticks â registering only five wides over the 60 minutes. Try as they might, Westport couldnât get a foothold in the game at all. David Horan, Brian McDermot and Ruairi Connelly tried hard to carry the fight but they met a Deel Rovers outfit who were in no mood for messing. Keaneâs men meant business â and it showed from the very first minute. McDonald posted two with that sweet left peg; Gardiner fisted a third and Benson had a fourth â before most of the crowd had settled against the fence. Horan landed a beauty for Westport from way out the field â but Cross hit back with 1-02 â the goal a slick finish from Benson after Kevin Mulhern and McDonald crafted the opening. Ruairi Connelly added a brace (one a free) and Ryan Cafferky also chipped in with a free but Gardiner, and another brace from McDonald had Cross eight ahead when Kevin Connelly sent them to the dressing rooms for the half time break. Gardiner, Benson and McDonald were quite simply magical in that opening period and it looked highly unlikely that Westport would overturn such a deficit. The foundations for the victory were well and truly laid. Westport did raise the ante after the break, and with the wind at their backs stiffening, they stepped it up a gear. The trouble was, whenever they manufactured a score, Crossâ hit back â denying them any scoring momentum. A McDonald free got the second half moving â and Connelly and Liam ketterick, on a rare foray up from his full back berth, narrowed the gap for Westport. Up stepped McDonald again, with the classiest point of the day and when substitute, Sean kelly, hit two on the bounce, it was all over for the West Mayo men. Cafferky and Connelly added points as the half drew to a close, and when Crossâ Midfielder, Paul Duffy, pointed in injury time, the resultant kick out went straight to Kevin Mulhern and he blasted home Crossmolinaâs second goal. There was still time for Mark McCafferkey to find the net for Westport, but it was little more than a consolation score at that stage. Crossmolina are safe. Westport must go to battle one more time to keep their Senior status intact. They play the losers of the Ballina / Kiltane clash. Crossmolina: C. Reilly, C. Myles, S. OâMalley, J. OâBoyle, J. North Mayo U18A Championship, Final; Knockmore Vs Crossmolina Deelrovers, Friday 12/9/14 @ 6.30pm @ James Stephens Park, Ballina Knockmore 1-13 Crossmolina Deelrovers 3-06 Minors win North Title Crossmolina captured the North Mayo Minor title in dramatic finish with a goal from a penalty in injury time from Fionan Duffy after Tommy Walsh was upended by the Knockmore goalkeeper to give the Deel-Siders their first North A title since 1994. A win which was marred by a flare up which involved mentors and players from both sides. Knockmore got off to the perfect start with points from Joe OâNeill and Ciaran OâConnell inside eight minutes. Fionan Duffy tied the score with points in 9th and 14th minutes. Darragh Gibbons added a point and Peter Naughton tacked on two within a minute, in 20th minute. Tommy Walsh and Fionan Duffy reduced the lead to the minimum by 26th minute but is was Knockmore who finished the half as they started with two points from Peter Naughton to leave score at the break 0 â 7 to 0 â 4. Three points from Darragh Gibbons, Peter Naughton and Aaron Dempsey in opening ten minutes pushed Knockmore further clear. Gary Hopkins gave Crossmolina a life line when he scored a cracking goal after good approach work from Nigel Caden and Ronan Callaghan in the 46th minute. Back came Knockmore with a goal from a penalty by Peter Naughton to restore his sides six points advantage. With the game slipping away from Crossmolina they suddenly found their shooting boots after missing some gilt edge chances in the opening half first Captain Ronan Callaghan fired over a point, Keith Hopkins then went on a surging run from midfield before unleashing a rocket of a shot past Conor Brogan in the 25th minute. The same player pointed minutes later to leave just a point separating the sides. Crossmolina needed a score to stay in the title race and no better man than Tommy Walsh to get on the end of attack and the rest is history. Some of these Deelrovers players were on the teams who had lost the three previous finals and this made this victory all the more sweeter. Michael McKenzie The North Board Chairman presented the Frank McGuire Cup to Captain Ronan Callaghan much to the delight of the large Crossmolina following.
